Frank Arnold's BYU Cougars came into the 1980-1981 season with a bad taste in their mouth. After going 24-5 the prior season the Cougars were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Clemson. The good news is BYU returned 3 future NBA players including All-American guard, Danny Ainge. Returning for his senior season, Ainge led the Cougars in scoring (24.4ppg) and assists (4apg) on his way to winning the Wooden Award.

After finishing the 1986-1987 regular season 18-9 and finishing 4th in the WAC, the Wyoming Cowboys needed to make a run in the conference tournament.

The 1989-90 Michigan State Spartans entered the season unranked and unthought of in regards to the Big Ten Championship race. Led by all-everything shooting guard Steve Smith, the Spartans teetered inside the top 25 for most of the winter. It wasn't until Jud Heathcote's team won their last 10 regular season games including wins against #15 Illinois, #25 Indiana, #8 Michigan, #17 Minnesota and #10 Purdue, that people started seeing MSU as a Final Four contender.
